Introduction to Christian Apologetics: Understanding the Arguments

Greetings, my brothers in Christ!

I humbly present to you my very first attempt at an "official" newsletter. Anyone that really knows me is aware of my commitment to constant improvement- and this newsletter is the next logical step to both raising the standards of our work and expanding the reach of this ministry. While I can't 100% commit to actually sending one every week, I will certainly do my best to simply convert my notes for each weekly meeting into an easily digestible newsletter in order to help reinforce the lessons learned and allow those that can't physically make it on Wednesday nights. As you may remember, the last session I led was over some of the essential arguments of Christian Apologetics. So here we go:

Apologetics Reference: Arguments for the Existence of God:

The Kalam Cosmological Argument:

Premise 1: Whatever begins to exist has a cause.
Premise 2: The universe began to exist.
Conclusion: Therefore, the universe has a cause (i.e., God).
Key Focus: The beginning of the universe demands an external, uncaused, timeless, immaterial, and powerful Creator.

Leibniz's Contingency Argument:

Premise 1: Everything that exists has an explanation (either by necessity or cause). Premise 2: The universe exists but is not necessary.
Conclusion: Therefore, the universe has an explanation—God.
Key Focus: Why is there something rather than nothing?

The Fine-Tuning Argument:

Premise 1: The constants and conditions of the universe are precisely set for life. Premise 2: Such precision is highly improbable under chance or necessity. Conclusion: The best explanation is intelligent design.
Analogy: A single dial in the universe’s control panel is tuned exactly right for life. Verses: Psalm 19:1; Romans 1:20

The Teleological Argument:

Premise 1: Complex, purposeful design implies a designer.
Premise 2: The natural world shows immense design.
Conclusion: Therefore, the natural world has a Designer.
Examples: DNA as coded information; irreducible complexity in biology.

The Moral Argument:

Premise 1: Objective moral values and duties exist. Premise 2: Objective morals require a moral lawgiver. Conclusion: Therefore, a moral God exists.
Key Focus: Without God, there’s no absolute 'ought.' Verses: Romans 2:14-15; Micah 6:8

The Ontological Argument:

Premise 1: We can conceive of a “greatest possible being.”
Premise 2: Existence in reality is greater than existence only in the mind. Conclusion: Therefore, the greatest conceivable being must exist in reality.
Key Focus: Logical necessity of God’s existence if the concept of God is coherent

"But why Jesus, though?"

The Resurection Argument: "The Empty Tomb!"

“But if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:14 (LSB)

1. The Empty Tomb

  • Fact: Even Jesus’ enemies admitted the tomb was empty (Matthew 28:11–15).

  • Historical weight: Early Jewish and Roman sources never produced a body—only alternative explanations.

2. Eyewitness Testimony

  • Fact: Multiple independent sources (the Gospels, Paul’s letters, early creeds) report post-resurrection appearances.

  • Evidence: Over 500 eyewitnesses are cited (1 Corinthians 15:6), many of whom were still alive when Paul wrote it.

3. Transformation of the Disciples

  • Fact: Cowardly, fearful men became bold preachers willing to die for what they claimed to have seen.

  • Inference: People may die for a lie they believe, but not for one they know to be false.

4. Early Creedal Evidence

  • Fact: The resurrection creed in 1 Corinthians 15:3–7 dates to within a few years of the crucifixion.

  • Significance: This shows belief in the resurrection wasn’t a later legend—it was the earliest Christian conviction.

5. Conversion of Skeptics

  • Fact: Saul of Tarsus (Paul) and James (Jesus’ half-brother) were skeptics who radically converted after claiming to see the risen Christ.

  • Historical strength: Conversions of known opponents are powerful evidence of sincerity and truth.

6. Failure of Naturalistic Explanations

  • Hallucination, theft, or swoon theories fail to explain all the historical data together (empty tomb, multiple appearances, conversions, and movement growth).

7. Birth and Growth of the Church

  • Fact: Christianity exploded from Jerusalem—the very city where Jesus was executed—under intense persecution.

  • Best explanation: The disciples genuinely believed they had encountered the risen Christ.

Prayer Requests:

Please remember these people in your , brothers, and believe in your heart that they will help; because they do!

"Whatever you ask in my namem this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it."

-John 14:13-14

**These are the Prayer Requests from this week (10/29/2025)

  1. For my student of over 16 years that came to the his first ministry session last night, Matthew Farabow: Matt is getting married in two weeks! Please pray for blessings over this new union under God. He also requested prayer for his friend that considers herself a "practicing witch"- that she may come to know the Lord take advantage of the free gift of salvation that comes only through Christ Jesus.
  2. For Jay: We are praying for safe travels on his business trip to Argentina next week. We are also praying for safety and comfort for his family during this time. Jay has also requested prayers for his friend, fellow LEO, and new JJ Blue Belt that is working security at a Church and is on the cusp of accepting Christ! May our prayers push him over the edge to everlasting life in the presence of God!
  3. We are continuing to pray for Bryan's friend, Isaac, who has already began to experience fantastic recovery after going into cardiac arrest last week at the age of 34. Please continue to pray for a full recovery and strength for his family all to the glory of God!
  4. Please continue to pray for our brother, Dan, to experience a full recovery from his heart problems so that he may return to his normal daily life and get back on the mat for training!

Thank you for joining us this week. We're excited to continue exploring these topics with you. Stay curious, stay connected, and remember, your voice matters in our community.

Until next time,

-MS

NMA Men's Ministry

Welcome to the official newsletter of the NMA Men’s Ministry — where physical self-defense meets spiritual and theological defense. Each week, our men gather to sharpen both body and mind as we train to “give a reason for the hope that is in us” (1 Peter 3:15). Through studying God’s Word — perfectly preserved in the 66 books of the Holy Bible — we prepare ourselves to stand firm in truth, lead with conviction, and defend the faith with both courage and clarity.
